We now come to a part of the James study that is a soap box of mine (also a toe stepper, I admit). The issue with the tongue. This one gets every single one of us.

Did you know that the tongue is the strongest muscle in the body? It should be. We use it all the time. It is also the most powerful force on the planet. It can span generations. It can bring mass destruction. It can be the uplifting agent.

When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn…

When the young men left the building, they stood at the bottom of the stairs and looked around the compound. The eerie silence did not go unnoticed. In the distance, they heard the sound of the city moving about, but overall, the compound was rather remote and quiet.

Several picnic tables were scattered about the front lawn area next to the driveway. The areas under the tables were bare from the amount of use they once got. Now they sat silent and alone.

Trees covered the area, giving shade over the tables, and situated off to the side were a…

God is patient. If He were not, we would all be dead. Humans have a tendency to try even the perfect One. But that doesn’t mean God does not get frustrated with us. Love can be frustrating at times.

You have wearied the LORD with your words.

“How have we wearied him?” you ask.

By saying, “All who do evil are good in the eyes of the LORD, and he is pleased with them” or “Where is the God of justice?” (2:17 NIV)

We constantly go against His directions and teachings. From a parent’s perspective, I know how frustrated I…

The bustling rudimentary airport was filled with exotic noises as people moved about carrying various sized objects and rushing past on bikes. Baskets of fruit, wood for fire, and fishing equipment blurred around them. People called out to each other as they passed along the way. The strangeness of a foreign language being spoken all around added to the surreal feeling of it. They weren’t in Kansas anymore.

The area served for more than a landing strip. It was also a major thoroughfare on the small Andaman mainland island. Pedestrians who had scattered off the runway to make way for…

Here are a few verses that can really be misapplied from the Bible. The book of James begins to address how riches in the end are worthless. Do NOT add to that and say that the rich are worthless and all evil. Too many people do that. God blessed Job with riches, David with riches, and Solomon with riches. These were not evil people. They were blessed by God.

James 5:1–6

Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold…

Our nature is to plan. We are taught to plan out our future whether it is what we will do when we retire to what we are doing every minute of tomorrow. If you aren’t planning, you are seen as lazy or without ambition which is not positive in our society. But planning ahead might not be the best thing in the world, or at least putting so much faith into those plans.

Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why…

The tongue can be very dangerous. Wars have started over this small muscle. Because of that danger, James, in the Bible, won’t let the subject go. In fact, a large portion of his book deals with our words. James continues his comments on the tongue with this.

All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. (3:7–8 NIV)

The Tongue is Too Strong

We are an advanced civilization. We have done amazing things. We can get a killer…

James decides that we need a little admonishing again. And once you read these verses, you might just agree with him. We need to be put in our place once in awhile as we grow and mature.

Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you — who are you to judge your…

There is a legend about one of our founding fathers. Surprise! For real, there is one that is partially accurate but not quite the way it has been portrayed over the years. Our first president, George Washington, is said to have grown marijuana. So if he did, why shouldn’t we?

George Washington grew hemp in his garden, not marijuana. The official Mount Vernon site states the following:

Throughout his lifetime, George Washington cultivated hemp at Mount Vernon for industrial uses. The fibers from hemp held excellent properties for making rope and sail canvas. …

If you have read any of James in the Bible, you might be surprised at some of his writing. He’s not mean, but he is very blunt. A reader can find some harsh, but true, words coming from James. They are the kind of words that stop you in your tracks, get your defenses up, and make you rethink a lot.

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn, and…
