A Writing Course Helps Writers Improve Their Work

To be honest, I don’t think you can ever be so experienced that you can’t take a simple writing course. You can always learn something new even if it is just a refresher. Think of it like this. Experienced drivers get into really bad habits. Getting back to the basics taught sometimes correct these bad habits and actually make them a better driver. So it is with writing.

There are many writing courses available to you. Some could be found at your library or local universities and colleges. There are many online. You don’t have to get one through an accredited school unless you are looking for degrees. Any writing course will do from a reputable teacher. It’s the point of practicing, challenging yourself, and correcting bad habits.

What you are looking for is better technique such as grammar, sentence structure, and development such as that of plot, character, etc. You might want to look for courses that teach specific genre writing. If you are only going to write romance, then look for writing courses that focus on that genre. The styles can be different so you want courses aimed at your story genres.

Some are designed by writing institutes while others are developed by writers who have come together to help each other. Look online or check our local universities for available courses.

Don’t be afraid to take a course. There is nothing that will hurt you. Yes, you will learn things that you thought you knew but were applying incorrectly. Yes, your mistakes will be pointed out, but you can apply the correction and improve your writing. The only thing that can come out of it if you really work on it is better writing.

It can be nervous, but it can be so much fun. You’ll learn new things. You’ll experience new feelings. I have found that writing classes make me expand my own abilities and give me new perspectives.

Don’t be too arrogant to take a course. I don’t care who you are or how long you have been writing, you’ll get some benefit from a writing course. There are a few writer friends I know who look on instruction with disdain even from their editors. Sorry, but you’re never that good to warrant such behavior. Swallow your pride. In fact, make a promise to take at least one course each year. You never know what you’ll learn.
