Sometimes you have to give something to get something. New authors find it hard to get readers to take a chance on them. They have to give them a chance to find a new author and enjoy the writing.
Giving away your book could be the key to getting future sales. Take it from me as a reader. I find authors I would pay to read just by getting the first book for free.
KDP Select Giveaway Days
This is a very popular marketing tool that many authors use. By signing up with Amazon’s KDP Select program, you can give your book away for up to five days. Expect to have hundreds or thousands of people download your ebook. But don’t expect reviews to suddenly pop up.
Many readers download the free books to read later. I’ve done that and taken a couple of years to read, but it paid off for the author if I liked it. When I download free book, I often fall in love with the works. What did I do? I bought the next book and then the next. The author got results from that free download even when I write a review or post a rating online.
This is a great way to market your book. Readers enter contests all the time. If you use tools such as Rafflecopter, you can also gain followers on various social media sites and subscribers to newsletters while you are promoting your book by giving it away for free. Just like the KDP free days, readers get these books and eventually read them. If they like them, they’ll spend the money to read more.
Again, I can’t tell you how many I have gotten for free books that have me wanting more. And people like to feel like winners.
Books need to have reviews written about them. That means you have to give your book to those who review books regularly. I get contacted several times a day to review books. Authors and/or publishers contact me. If I agree to read it, they send me a print or digital copy of the book. It goes into my queue. Eventually I read it and review it. A few I have loved and bought other books written by the author.
Give reviewers your book with no strings attached.
This is one marketing idea that many authors don’t think of or refuse to do, but it could really pay off. Order a bunch of print copies of your book. Put in a bookmark or business card with website info and such. Then leave the book at the hospital, doctor’s office, or anywhere people sit and wait. They’ll pick up the book and read it. Who knows! You might find an avid fan.
It’s Not For Free
Don’t think of it as giving product away for free. You are investing in yourself and your works. How confident are you in what you are marketing? If it’s high confidence, then a free book here and there will only help the future of your works.
