What are Writing Prompts?

Writing prompts are literally anything that can prompt a story within you. It can be an event, a sentence, a picture, or even a group of words. They are used to prompt your creative brain to come up with a scene, a short story, a play, or a full novel. Even a movie script can come from a simple writing prompt.

How to Use These Writing Prompts

This is a dictionary writing prompt. Usually, this kind of prompt is done by you pulling out a physical dictionary. Look at some number near you. It can be from a check stub or some papers from work. Choose any number or part of one that fits in the number of pages of your dictionary. For example, I am looking at a piece of paper with the number 492368 on it. So in my dictionary, I look up page 492 and chose the 36th word on it. That is the word I’d use for my writing prompt.

The real challenge is gathering a few of these words and their definition and use a story that can be inspired by those words. And you have to use the words in the story. So if you are writing a short story, those words have to be used in that story. It is fun because you also learn new words.
