Review of A Girl Like You

Summary
The mid-1930s. Life isn’t easy for a young woman who has familial obligations on top of the struggle to survive working to support those she loved. Murder doesn’t help any of those struggles. Working as a taxi dancer, Henrietta finds herself with a dead boss and an intriguing inspector turns her world upside down.
Review
Note: This was an audiobook.
I love historical pieces especially when a mystery is involved. It is even more enjoyable when the characters are well-developed.
This was a very enjoyable listen as the story quickly draws the reader into the life of Henrietta. The action doesn’t start immediately. That comes later after the author has set up the story by letting the reader get to know the main character and her life. This is not just a mystery story. This is a story of life and the struggles so many of us face.
I loved getting to know Henrietta and those around her. It added depth to the story and made me feel like I had a stake in it.
As to it being an audiobook, the narrator did a most excellent job in reading the story. She adapts to different characters and give them their own unique life. I found myself captivated and had to keep listening to know what would happen next.

Author
Michelle Cox is the author of the multiple award-winning Henrietta and Inspector Howard series as well as “Novel Notes of Local Lore,” a weekly blog dedicated to Chicago’s forgotten residents. She suspects she may have once lived in the 1930s and, having yet to discover a handy time machine lying around, has resorted to writing about the era as a way of getting herself back there. Coincidentally, her books have been praised by Kirkus, Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, Booklist, and many others, so she might be on to something. Unbeknownst to most, Michelle hoards board games she doesn’t have time to play and is, not surprisingly, addicted to period dramas and big band music. Also marmalade.
