Henrietta and Clive are married. They come home to find more family drama and mysteries that just begged to be solved. Elsie takes more of a solid role and give them something to stand and up and notice.

I highly recommend that you read the previous books before this one. While you won’t be completely lost, you will get a much better understanding of the characters and situations.

There are times as I read these stories that I begin to get frustrated more because I emotional get invested in characters. When I see a scene about to transpire, I can get caught up in it. Yes, a few times the characters are predictable, but it doesn’t make it less enjoyable — just more frustrating.

I read a few reviews where some called the stories boring. These are written with a classical flair that means more narrative of the people and their thoughts than direct action. If you like stories that are written in a style that crosses between the Bronte sisters and modern novels, this is the author to follow.

The books are set in the 1930s so the relationships reflect that as well as their thoughts and actions. Women aren’t as independent as they are now. It can be frustrating, but it was the times and the author stays true with enough rebellion to give spice to the story.

I enjoy the author’s writing style and the narrator as I listened to the audiobook. It fit the genre and the time period perfectly.

If you like historical fiction that isn’t quite written like it had been a few hundred years prior but enjoy the heart of it, give these books a try. I don’t think you will regret it.
