One of the topics found in the book of James is what he has to say on the tongue. I’ll be honest. It usually hurts as it . The things we need to hear the most often do. But I only know of one or two people who do not need to learn more about how to control their tongue.
The tongue is a powerful force. It can cause so much damage to our loved ones and ourselves. That is why it is so important to tame that beast.
The Tongue Can Reveal The Real You
James says in 1:26–27
If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. (NIV)
Now, there are MANY people who consider themselves religious. Being religious can be defined in various ways. To many, it is the tight relationship with God. Most look at being religious as focusing on the actions of a religion and not as much on the heart/soul relationship. Going to church regularly is seen as religious though that same person might steal from their neighbors. Their actions are religious.
But no matter what religious means to you, you are deceived if you cannot take hold of your tongue. Your tongue can do more damage and longer lasting damage than a forest fire. To claim to be religious, your actions need to reflect that sentiment.
Talking Out of Both Sides of Your Mouth
Think of it this way…. You proclaim yourself as a Christian and brag about all the times you are in church, the time you give to ministries, and even the money you give. Then you spread rumors about another person. Your tongue did the opposite of your religious proclamations. With all the hype you give of your religious status, your tongue should be supporting it instead of undermining it.
Your works proclaim your faith. When your tongue reveals that you don’t practice what you preach, you are seen as a liar. Are you?
Instead of gossiping and talking about worthless things that do nothing for anyone, why aren’t you giving a blanket to that homeless man, a few canned goods to the woman who just lost a job, volunteer to babysit for a single parent. Is your faith pure? Is it showing?
